Uswag Arts and Crafts is the marketing
arm of Uswag Development Foundation, a not profit,
non-government organization as a response to the
growing need of rural craft artisans for access to
markets for their crafts.
Uswag Arts and Crafts is based in Aklan
in the island of Panay, Philippines. Aklan is a
province rich in natural resources and traditional
artistic skills. Such skills include handloom
weaving of piña (pineapple) cloth, abaca (Manila
hemp) and raffia cloth, nito vine basketry, palm
leaf mats and tayok-tayok grass, woven into sleeping
mats and bags.
Uswag Arts and Crafts was started in
1996 with assistance from local, national and
international organizations, notably the
PACAP-AusaAID. The aim is to open up market outlets
to local community groups of skilled artisans.
Uswag Arts and Crafts
assist producer groups through market research,
product development and design, participating in
local, national and international trade fairs,
linkaging with support organizations and agencies
for assistance, and in instilling quality control. |
